Thermowell for safety-critical applications
Many reactions in the chemical industry are exothermic, meaning they release heat during the process. Controlling these reactions is crucial to prevent overheating and potential hazards. One example is polymerization, which is used to produce materials like plastics, synthetic fibers, adhesives, resins. To meet the challenges of temperature monitoring in such critical processes, a thermowell design has been developed that responds to process changes up to five times faster than standard designs.

The challenge
In these safety-sensitive applications, rapid temperature changes must be monitored and controlled. One particularly critical scenario is the so called “runaway” reaction, where a linear temperature increase accelerations reaction speeds of the components. If detected in time, the reaction can be stopped either by injecting an inhibitor or by a sudden pressure release.
Our solution
The foundation is our universally applicable, modular industrial thermometer iTHERM ModuLine TM131, enhanced with the fast-responding thermowell QuickLink. In this design, the thermowell tip surrounding the sensor position is equipped with a material that offers two key advantages.
